On the Third Day of Digital Leadership…Be Pragmatic!
3. Be Pragmatic
Every school has its own unique set of circumstances and restraints. Be pragmatic about working within your own bounds to create a culture of digital leadership (and impact) that is truly sustainable. Stephan Caspar, Media Development Lead, from the Institute for Learning Innovation and Development at the University of Southampton talked about how the financial pressures of staff within the Further Education system in the UK, led them to be more inventive around digital leadership and innovation. Andrew Harper, Head of Innovation, UNHCR talked about how he was mining tech innovation for ways to get teaching and learning to 65 million displaced people around the world.
‘FE is always being squeezed; there is a resourcefulness that people have when that starts to happen.’ —Stephan Caspar, Media Development Lead, from the Institute for Learning Innovation and Development at the University of Southampton
‘We’ve got to start looking at a modular learning experience. Technology is critical, because there is no other way to get learning experiences to the tens of thousands of people. I’m in desperate need of good ideas. We can’t be bureaucratic about it, we need to be engaged with legitimate sustainable ideas that can be easily scaled up.’ – Andrew Harper, Head of Innovation, UNHCR
Lesson: Take inspiration from those in even more challenging circumstances than yourself. Drive for value and creative solutions (or “frugalvation” as others might call it), and be aware of your own particular set of limiting circumstances.
