On the Second Day of Digital Leadership… Understand What Your Aims Are!
2. Understand what your aims are
A legacy of poor investments in hardware when times were ‘flush’ has given digital leadership a bad name, with vanity projects outweighing efficacious projects within schools. Having a robust framework to establish and keep track of your strategic objectives is essential. Here’s Michelle Thomas, Executive Head teacher of 3 primary schools in Hackney, London, UK:
‘Don’t use an iPad if it’s much quicker on pen and paper! Think about the use of the technology. Don’t have it replacing something, because that’s not going to take it anywhere. An appraisal system around the use of technology was key for us, not an extra add-on.’
Lesson: Understand what you want from digital leadership across the school and why, then ensure that these aims are clear to all involved. Only invest in technologies which support these aims.
