What’s in this episode?
This week’s episode is all about empowering teachers and Learners.
We hear from a range of school leaders, professional development specialists, and techie teachers, about the conditions to empower teachers and learners. We talk teacher time, flexibility and trust, evidence-based practice relevant to particular school context, and how to best implement tech that supports T & L.
Is the UK system compatible with empowering teaching and learning? We discuss this with our guests as well as the initiatives, tools and services that empower teaching and learning and more.

Sophie Bailey is the Founder and Presenter of The Edtech Podcast
Sophie is the founder of the iTunes new and noteworthy, The Edtech Podcast. Sarah Horrocks, Director, London Connected Learning Centre
Sarah is director of London Connected Learning Centre. She was previously a primary teacher and deputy headteacher and she now works with schools and settings from foundation stage to sixth form providing professional learning for teachers and strategic advice for school senior leadership teams. She recently published a study on the impact of blogging on children’s writing, which she presented for the Harold Rosen Memorial Lecture at UCL Institute of Education with co-author Myra Barrs. Sarah’s other areas of interest include digital portfolios, assessment, early years and digital strategy in schools. Sarah can support schools with their computing curriculum planning, assessment, ICT Mark and digital strategy. Sarah is also available for public speaking engagements. Twitter: @s_horrox
Cat Scutt, Director of Education and Research, Chartered College of Teaching and Learning | Twitter: @CatScutt
A former English teacher, Cat’s roles have since focused on supporting teacher development both online and through face-to-face activities, with a particular focus on development through collaboration and through engagement with research and evidence. She has worked as a teacher and advisor in the state and independent sector, as well as in corporate learning and development. Cat leads on the Chartered College Of Teaching’s work around teacher CPD, including the Chartered Teacher programme, and their research activities and publications, including their termly peer reviewed journal, Impact. In addition, Cat is a studying for her doctorate at the UCL Institute of Education.
Deirdre Hodson, Policy Officer, European Commission, Across Education, Youth, Sport and Culture
Deirdre works on the European Commission’s digital education policy team in Brussels. Through research, funding programmes, policy coordination and practical tools like SELFIE, the team aims to support countries across Europe on innovation in education, digital skills and enhancing teaching and learning with digital technologies. Deirdre runs a European network of ministries of education, NGOs and other organisations working on digital age learning. She has been leading with Panagiotis the SELFIE project since the first beta version of the tool in 2017. Deirdre is also a student on the MSc programme on Digital Education with the University of Edinburgh. Her research focus is on development of computer science curricula in upper secondary education. Rachel Ashmore, Head, Promethean Academy, Senior Education Consultant, Promethean
Rachel Ashmore has been working at Promethean for 17 years, specialising in the creation and delivery of training sessions that benefit end-users to make best use of education technology. Rachel is currently Head of Promethean Academy, which ensures schools have access to free training resources and content that are readily available online, alongside insightful demonstrations and orientation training sessions. Stephen Holden, Head Teacher, Tottington Primary School
Having taught in a variety schools for 11 years, Stephen Holden took his first headship at Tottington Primary School in Bury. As a school that was satisfactory over time and then placed in RI, Stephen worked quickly and efficiently with an outstanding team to rapidly improve standards and provision. The school now leads the way in research-led, innovative approaches to education that ensure high engagement and speedy progress for all.
