#185 – University and Industry, What is next?

Hello everyone and welcome to the sixth episode of our “The Edge” series, supported by Salesforce.Org. This series is all about new ways of doing things in Higher Education leadership.
This week we’re talking about University and Industry. The relationship between University and Industry is complicated; on the one-hand Student loan debt in 2020 is now about $1.56 trillion in the US alone, with graduates described by employers as being overqualified but underskilled. On the other, Universities are responsible for some of the most cutting-edge research and innovation deployed by industry, and a broad liberal arts education is seen to underpin our best creative and networked problem solvers.
Yet, too many are outside of this network. Industry calls for diverse thinkers and agile approaches to our biggest societal problems. So, in this episode we pick apart University and Industry, exploring learning economics in an age of perpetual upskilling, the unique strengths of University and Industry respectively, and to what extent established Universities are limited by how they can evolve through regulation and red tape.
