Gerd Kortemeyer received his doctorate in physics from Michigan State University, USA, where he continued to work as instructional technology specialist before becoming a professor of physics. His work at Michigan State focused on the use of educational technology in STEM education, both through the provision of online platforms and materials and through research into its effectiveness. He also serves as Director of the open-source LON-CAPA initiative. In 2019, he took a leave from Michigan State University to serve as Director of Educational Development and Technology at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His current interests include the establishment of a theoretical framework for the next generation learning management systems.
